Citation¶
If you use heavytails in your research, teaching, or professional work, please cite it.
Which DOI to use¶
The software is archived on Zenodo, which mints two kinds of DOI. They are not interchangeable and the difference matters for reproducibility.

The first is the concept DOI. It is the one to use by default, and the one on the badge in the README.
Reproducibility wants the version DOI
If a reviewer should be able to reproduce a number, cite the version DOI and state the version in the text. A concept DOI resolves to whatever is newest at the time of reading, which may not be what you ran. Every release has its own version DOI, listed under "Versions" on the Zenodo record.

Cite the method as well as the software¶
The library is an implementation, not the source of the methods it implements.
Where a result rests on a particular estimator, cite the paper it comes from
alongside the software. Every one of these is listed in CITATION.cff and
.zenodo.json, so the entry can be copied rather than hunted down.

The adaptive trimming rule is not from the paper
adaptive_trimmed_hill_estimator uses the trimmed estimator of
Bhattacharya, Kallitsis and Stoev, but the rule for choosing how much to
trim is a sequential exact test on the log-spacings rather than their
adaptive procedure. Cite their paper for the estimator; the selection rule
is part of this software.
Acknowledgement instead of citation¶
Where a citation is not appropriate:
"Computational analyses were performed using heavytails, a Python library for heavy-tailed distributions (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22045594)."
How the metadata is kept honest¶
CITATION.cff holds the shared citation fields, and .zenodo.json overrides
what Zenodo would otherwise infer from the GitHub release. The two are checked
against each other, including that every reference in one appears in the other:
tests/test_zenodo_metadata.py runs the same checks in CI, so the two files
cannot drift apart unnoticed. The release workflow is in
Releasing.
